Jakarta: The development of information and communication technology has made learning media increasingly diverse. One of them is with bring your own device (BYOD), where teachers or lecturers allow students to bring gadgets.
Professor at the Faculty of Education (FIP) at Surabaya State University (Unesa) Mochamad Nursalim explained that BYOD is an approach that allows students to bring electronic devices such as gadgets or devices for learning needs and purposes.
This approach was developed based on various problems that are often encountered in learning classes or lectures. “Students or students have difficulty learning because teachers tend to use monotonous methods, oriented towards theory and assignments,” said Nursalim, quoted from the unesa.ac.id page, Monday, September 11 2023.
He said that this problem required a transformation in a teaching style that was more interesting and effective. One of them, using a BYOD approach.
Nursalim said there are many benefits to the BYOD approach, namely students learn to make the best decisions to choose devices according to their learning needs and form collaborative learning communities to solve problems.
In addition, it increases student participation and willingness to learn, as well as enabling more personalized learning, preparing students for the digital environment, and promoting better classroom management.
He said implementing the BYOD approach needed to be supported by a good data security and monitoring system. Nursalim reveals tips for using the BYOD approach.
First, making clear rules or policies regarding the use of devices or gadgets in the classroom by teachers, students and parents. Second, activities need to be structured so that the use of devices or applications so that device use activities are more focused and clear according to learning objectives.
Third, physical classroom settings such as filling in device data to ensure the use of this approach is more effective and efficient. Fourth, active supervision. Teachers supervise the use of applications and devices so that learning is directed.
Fifth, collaboration and communication between students and teachers is needed, as well as messaging platforms and online forums that can be used for discussions about learning. Sixth, application and content management. Nursalim recommends students install applications that are useful in learning.
“Teachers must also evaluate and provide feedback on the use of devices, including measuring learning progress and achievement of the material presented,” explained the FIP Individual Counseling Professor at the 7th FIP International Conference on Education Innovation (ICEI) at the Unesa Rectorate at the end of August 2023.
