Jakarta: Minister of Education, Culture, Research and Technology (Mendikbudristek) Nadiem Makarim has three young daughters. Just like most parents, Nadiem doesn’t want his children to be exposed to gadgets from an early age.

Nadiem and his wife Franka Makarim have their own principles in looking at children’s use of gadgets. According to Franka, technology cannot be stopped, but children’s use of gadgets can be controlled.

“We cannot stop the use of technology, but how quickly we introduce it and how, with what, that is what we can control,” said Franka in her Instagram post with Nadiem, quoted Monday, November 20 2023.
Franka believes that gadgets have a bad impact. Especially, for children who are still very young.

“This (gadget) is something that is all bad, but for small children it is clearly much worse. And there are almost no positives, for small children,” said Franka.

However, that doesn’t mean their children are not exposed to technology. Franka said there are clear boundaries for her children to interact with technology.

“But it’s not like we don’t have any technology at home. They can also watch TV at (certain) hours. Spotify, audio. Mas Nadiem has started giving Spotify this year,” explained Franka.

Nadiem revealed that he started giving children’s stories via audio. He thinks audio is not a problem, because his children are allowed to play music.

“Of course, the playlist I chose was not audio, not stories. So things that don’t focus on videos or interactive games,” said Nadiem.

He said interactive games for young children would be extraordinarily addictive.

“No matter how great their parents are, no matter how comfortable their world environment is, all children will be defeated by it (gadgets) because it hijacks their brains,” said Nadiem.
