The phenomenon of Android cellphone users switching to iPhones is common in the smartphone world. Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP), a market research institute based in the United States (US) revealed two main reasons that encourage Android users to switch to iPhones.

First, many Android users use smartphones at relatively affordable prices. Therefore, they choose to move to the iPhone which has almost comparable prices, rather than returning to Android. Some iPhone models, such as the iPhone SE series, are available at prices almost comparable to mid-range Android smartphones.

The second reason is the desire of Android users to try the iOS operating system with its various exclusive features, including iMessage and Facetime. To try these features, you don’t need an expensive version of the iPhone or the latest model. Apart from that, this reason also causes most Android users who move to iPhone to choose older models. In general, CIRP research throughout 2023 shows that the majority of iPhone buyers in a given quarter are former Android users.

As many as 29 percent of former Android users chose to use an older iPhone model, such as iPhone SE, iPhone 12, or iPhone 13. This percentage is higher than iPhone users who only upgraded to some of these models, which only reached 21 percent. .

However, there are also a number of former Android users who choose to buy newer iPhone models, including the iPhone 14, iPhone 15, and iPhone 15 Pro Max. Based on CIRP analysis in 2023, around 37 percent of former Android users will choose to switch to newer iPhone models.

From the results of this research, CIRP concluded that the latest technological factors are not always a top priority for users. Instead, users consider the value and function of the device more before upgrading their cellphone.

Even though there is a trend of switching Android users to iPhone, the total number of Android users worldwide is still greater than iPhone users. According to a Counterpoint Research study in the third quarter of 2023, total sales of devices with the Android operating system globally reached 81 percent, while iOS devices only reached 16 percent.

Android is becoming more popular because it offers a more open software experience than the iPhone. Even so, the growth of iOS has the potential to expand in the future, especially with the increasing interest of consumers from developing countries to buy cellphones, including iPhones. Apart from Android and iOS, Counterpoint also noted the existence of the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), such as HarmonyOS developed by Huawei, although its global market share is still small.
